Break Free

I know that many of you are excited about the new United Live album, and myself too, I can't wait to try out all the new riffs, and share them with all of you. I can't do the songs yet because the album isn't out in my country yet, but if you have the album you can cut out the nice riffs (see 'guidelines' under Hillsong requests in the forum), put them on f-forge.com, and put the link up in the forum, as normy has done here. Enjoy the song!

The guitar has a strong 'twang' to it.. i suspect that they used single coil pickups for the song. However, I use humbuckers, but I previously installed a push-pull pot which allows me to use one coil, instead of two, somewhat emulating the single coil sound. If you're going to change your humbuckers anytime soon, I recommend installing this for added versatility.

Intro/Verse:
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2--

----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
---4---4-6~----4---4-6~-------------
-5---5--------5---5-------------------
----------------------------------------
~ = vibrato. You have to mute the strings with your fretting hand and rake across them with your pick in between the above riff as well. To mute the strings, rest your fretting hand lightly on the strings, such that you get a 'pluck' sound, but not the note.

Prechorus:
-------------------------
-------------------------
-------------------------
-------------------------
-------------------------
-2-2-2-2~-2-2-2-2~-2-2-2-
Accent the notes when 'break free' is sung. You can substitute '0' for the '2's in bold.

------------------------
------------------------
------------------------
-4-4--6-6---4-4--6-6--
-5-5--5-5---5-5--5-5--
------------------------

Chorus:
The chords are:
A D E F#m D

Bridge:

This part is quite tricky (and tiring). You picking hand has to strum all the way, 4 times each beat (1234,2234,3234,4234, etc...). Your fretting hand mutes the strings by default, and presses down on the notes when you need the notes to sound out. You also need to listen carefully to the rhythm in the CD.. I suspect mine has inaccuracies.

For the instrumental part, strum these two chords:
---------------
-14-----17-----
-14-----16-----
-14-----14-----
---------------
---------------

Use these chords when the singing enters:
---------------
-14-----15-----
-14-----14-----
-14-----14-----
---------------
---------------

I'm pretty sure the bridge is at least two guitars, but it's pretty amazing you can do it all by yourself...

Yep i think it uses two guitars too, one with the string mutes, and another with the chords.

in the last part a 2nd guitar comes (each note played many times)
e--------17-16-14

E|-2-2-2*--2*--2-2
2*= 1/4 bend on 2

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
D|-4-4-----6-6----
A|-5-5-----5-5----[X2]

Hi!

I definitely has a typical single coil sound to it, but I equipped my Starfield with A SD Hot rail (bridge), SD vintage rail(mid) and DiMarzio Fast track 1 (neck). These are all humbuckers in single coil format, but the vintage rail and the fast track have a typical single coil twang, yet a higher output. Higly recommended for these kind of songs!
I use a Boss GT-8 and have a very nice result with a 'clean-twin' preamp and a 'booster' overdrive, some delay and reverb. Almost the same 'twangy' sound! Tweak with all the settings.

Awesome video! I have a question: on the chorus are you supposed to strum up-down-up-down or are you supposed to do all down stroaks? The part I'm talking about is "there's no escaping the truth..." Thanks!
