In the Stillness

Years ago, me and the worship band I played in played somewhat loudly for worship; being in a traditional church then, it was kinda noisy for a congregation that grew up with hymns. The pastor shared us this verse after that:

1 King 19: 11-13
The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by."

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.

And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

It is fun (and perfectly alright) to make a loud praise unto the Lord, but sometimes the noise may just drown God out. Elijah thought to find God in the big wind, earthquake, and fire, but instead God showed His presence in a quiet whisper. Psalms 46:10 also goes "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth", a reminder that we can sometimes exalt God in the stillness, in the quiet. We can use quiet moments, especially in simple, quiet, worship songs, to create this sense of stillness to exalt God, and to feel and hear God - worship doesn't always have to be large, extravagant, and noisy.

I'll leave you with a still version of 'Still', enjoy!
