Break Free - Beat It

By Jerome

I really like this solo version! I discovered that my guitar has a push-pull pot, which I put to use here. Have fun!

Solo:
--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
-------6-4--4s6-4-2-2-----
-------------------4------
-2--2-5-------------------

--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
-------6-4--4s6-4-2-------
--------------------------
-2--2-5-------------------
rpt this 2x

then followed by the strum part:

Strum
--------------------------
--------------------------
--14-14-13-----13-13-14---
--14-14-14-----14-14-14---
--------------------------
--------------------------
hope you get the rhythm of this part!

I was looking for "Beat It" to make an appearance in your post, but it never did. C'mon, at least "Michael Jackson"?

No offense, but have you heard of Beat it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uqxo1SKB0z8
Skip to 0:48 . Here's hoping you have heard it...

I know they were just having fun, but I don't approve of having secular music integrated into a song dedicated to Christ. Not only that, they're "taking a break" from worshiping Him by putting that solo in there.

I'm usually the one to be told "Hey, that bass line is too flashy" in my worship team, but this time it's just bugging me.

I pray that Hillsong continues to live up to their name as a church that worships the Lord without compromise.

In response to AznKenshin,

First of all, all music is of God - since he created it. In this instance it is being used to glorify God and while the particular riff may be derived from a secular song, it is being used in a context that brings glory to God and that shows others that praising God does not always have to be a simple chord progression.

When it comes to praising God it is all about the person's heart. You can be singing the most Christian song ever written and not bring glory to God because of what is in your heart.

In this instance I believe that while they use a riff from a secular song, their hearts are focused on God even during this so called "break from worshipping".

I supose you haven't heard the Coldplay Clocks version of All Day. Yet another example of a secular song being implemented into praising God.

After all, it is the lyrics that make a song Godly or not - and they sang no michael jackson lyrics and so it is totally appropriate.

I think this little addition to Break Free made it 10x better and my solemn congratulations to the musicians who took the time to make a good song even better.

God Bless.

Julez, you did bring up good points. I feel that I may have gone a bit too far to express my discomfort. I apologize to everyone.

This reminds me that everyone has different opinions. You can have some churches that are more charismatic or traditional.

I grew up in a traditional church, but I fought for our church to be open-minded about worship. I was often criticized, but I did so subtly. In short, sometimes it felt like our church didn't want to "Break Free" from its "comfort zone." They've become more open to various types of music.

Just a little background from my point of view. So no, I didn't comment solely to criticize (who am I to judge?) but express my view and opinion, which, I thought, was taken a bit too far.

Only on a Christian Forum could someone be humble enough to agree when a better argument is given.

AznKenshin you give me hope for the morality of the internet.

Jerome I was waiting for this post since I first heard those solo's.

Few things...

--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
-------6-4--4s6-4-2-2-----
-------------------4------
-2--2-5-------------------

--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
-------6-4--4s6-4-2-------
--------------------------
-2--2-5-------------------

Is really hard to play and sounds wrong in parts.

Notably at the first 6 on the D. I feel it should be a 7. The other 6 sounds fine with the slide.

I think the tab should read...
--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
-------7-4--4s6-4-2-2-----
-------------------4------
-2--2-5-------------------

But I play the riff as so in an arpeggio sequence like this; it feels easier to play

--------------------------
--------------------------
--------------------------
-------7-4--4s6-4-2-2-----
-----4-------------4------
-2-5----------------------

Just my take on the riff, but yours does work.

I can't seem to get the strum riff. I see where you are muting, but man oh man I'm finding it a pain to work around, I can hear the rhythm. Maybe I just need to spend more time with it, but could you put up a slowed down version of when you play the mutes and when you play the actual tab notes written with the mutes on top?

Does that even make sense?

Dilpil said...

Brent man, sup.

I reckon the best way to play that part is to play it like the original but just move it up a fret.

------------------
-12--12-----------
-12--12----------- x2
--------14--------
------------------
------------------

for the chuga chuga inbetween the strums just place third finger lightly on the 14th fret of the d string and alternate pick it, much like the original version of break free.

Musical NOTES that happen to be in a praise song, or Michael Jackson's song is not Worship. They put it in there to have fun, the music isn't the worship, the HEART is. and since his heart is in it just as much as when we plays Beat It or when he plays the rest of the song is the same, its worship. I agree, it's iffy, it's on the line, but not quite passed it. Ultimately, i think it' God's to decide whats worship to himself or not, you know?

We don´t need to "think" or "guess" anythink we just need to hear what God has to say through his words (Bible): 1 Cor. 6:14-18

I Personally thik that we, as christian, have so many ways to worship greatly. We just don't need to use this kind of resources. But.. take your own cluclusions through God's words.

Prayse the lord allways!

where can i find the Coldplay Clocks version of All Day that Julez mentioned earlier?

The Coldplay Clocks version is not from Hillsong, it's from a group called United Praise on their album, Shout Your Glory. You can hear it here...http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/1476618-youth-alive

I don't think people should be so uptight about them inserting part of a secular song in their music. As a worship leader in my church I've seen that secular cover songs that relate to messages or little variations such as this one actually get people who don't have a relationship with God more interested in worship.

could probably also find an accurate tab version by searching for fall out boy's cover of beat it, which features john mayer. this sounds pretty true to that version.

i agree that it is our hearts doing the worship and music is really only a tool. without love, we are only clashing cymbals anyways.

And let's remember:
We are worshipping GOD, not the church or men. Our God is a God of Love and He sees OUR hearts and intentions..

*if anyone has time, i recommend a book written by Matt Redman called "The Unquenchable Worshipper". In pages 54-57 he talks about how he was having such a hard time connecting w/ the youth at a retreat and he kept feeling nudged and was very uncomfortable because he felt he was being told to sing "you're not alone" by micheal jackson.
He was unbelieveably uncomfortable during this because he was worried about what people would think and how they would judge him. Nevertheless, he went through with it and Worshipped.
As it turns out, there was a group of nonchristians there and that song was the only time they actually entered into something of worship. He also tells of a lady that was totally broken, feeling so alone, and needing God so badly, that came up to him and told him that song was Exactly what she needed!

I just think it's so uber awesome how God really moves in mysterious ways and how He really IS everywhere.. WE just need to Seek Him Out!!

Brent, the one and only got the first part of the beat it line right. The other part it sounds to me like he's doing

-----------------------
--10--10--7-----9--9---
---9---9--9-----9--9---
----------------------9
-----------------------
-----------------------

-------------------------
--10--10--7-----9--9--10-
---9---9--9-----9--9---9-
-----------------------
-----------------------
-----------------------

with a bend or whammy on the last one. Sounds like he basically repeats the second one again, but not exactly, then hits the Bm power chord.

to all the haters out there.. not to say this is right or wrong, but its my opinion. rather than looking at it being a 'secular' part of a song, look at the spirit that hillsong had when using it. its all for the Lord, its not to bring attention to themselves or anything.. if anything they are just "becoming all things to all men" by taking something of the world, and adding a spirit of Christ to it.

no need to be legalistic about the songs origin, but look at their heart - which im sure was in the right place!
