Chord Inversions (part 1) - Root Chords

By Jerome

Chords, at the basic level, comprise of three notes. Let's call these notes the root, 3rd, and 5th note (click here to find out more). Chords can be played with the root, 3rd, or 5th note as the lowest note. These variations give a slightly different 'feel' to each chord.

For the first chord shape (a D chord), the root note is played on the 6th string:

---------
---------
---------
---7-----
---9-----
--10-----

'10' is the root note which is a D note
'9' is the 3rd which is an F# note
'7' is the 5th is an A note
Togther, the D, F# and A notes form the D Chord.

Transpose it to play other chords.

You can also 'cut and paste' the fingering to the 5th, 4th, and 3rd strings to get a G chord:
---------
---------
---7-----
---9-----
--10-----
---------

You can also make minor tweaks to change the chord to a minor chord.

Examples:
-------------------
-------------------
-------------------
---7------7--------
---9------8--------
--10-----10--------
D to Dm

-------------------
-------------------
---7------7--------
---9------8--------
--10-----10--------
-------------------
G to Gm

Lastly, here are the chord shapes for the other strings:
-------------------
---7-----7---------
---8-----7---------
---9-----9---------
-------------------
-------------------
B to Bm

---7-----7---------
---9-----8---------
---9-----9---------
-------------------
-------------------
-------------------
E to Em

Yeah! Great video. You do a great job at this site and helping other Guitarists who are serving God to increase the music theory to increase the music played in worship times at church!

wow man, that's sweet! Just yesterday I was trying to explain this concept to my friend, a little unsuccessfully :P, but hopefully he'll be able to see the relationships now. Thanks!
